What's New in Manage 2.9

System and Foundation

A new Featured Platform that supports the MinIO high-performance private cloud solution, ideal for Splunk Smartstore integration. This allows the user to deploy MinIO Server as well as MinIO CLI on Gemini Enterprise after the MinIO binaries have been downloaded. A user dashboard offers control over running services and performance status.

Enhancements to Gemini Explore service controls and status:

  • New system resource pre-check prior to installation. This will verify that available resources meet the minimum system requirements.
  • The addition of granular service control for each service component. The user may restart individual components or download component logs for troubleshooting.
  • The addition of version information and disk space usage for each component.
  • An improved license service that supports the new Gemini Explore licensing.

There are several enhancements to Log Receiver.

  • Support TCP as a 'destination' within a rule.
  • Support UDP as a 'destination' within a rule.
  • Support for the Splunk HEC(HTTP Event Collector) as a ‘destination’ within a rule. Note that this only supports HTTP, HTTPS is not currently supported.
  • New Advanced Settings section that allows the user to configure using Syslog-NG syntax. (Please note this is still in beta.)
  • Log Receiver is now escalated to a top menu item.

The authentication mechanism between the Gemini Agent and the Management Center has been improved.

Fix multiple security vulnerabilities found and validated before September 10, 2020.

Web Console

All member nodes will now complete an automatic SSH key exchange with the Management Center. Thi includes the addition of new nodes into the Gemini Group and subsequent Splunk Environments.

  • The user account ‘sbox’ and ‘splunk’ of a Manage node will do the SSH key exchange.
  • The user account installing the Gemini Agent and running Splunk will do the SSH key exchange.

Splunk Manager

A new centralized Backup Center feature that allows the administrator to backup and restore Splunk and Gemini configuration files from each member node to the Management Center.

The manifest file required to add Manage Nodes and Gemini Agents into Splunk Environments now supports the CSV file format to complement the existing JSON method.

Important Notes

1. A reboot is required after upgrade. Backup the system and ensure it is offline before an upgrade. For VMware Appliances, ensure all the iSCSI devices are unmounted.
2. The upgrade process will take 5-10 minutes. During the upgrade, all Manage services will be stopped, allowing no operation of Manage.
3. Under no circumstance should a manual reboot be conducted during the upgrade. This will cause unrecoverable damage. Gemini appliance will reboot automatically following a successful upgrade.
